What Current Staff Say

We are special not so much in what we do but in the way of how we do things.聽Our Catholic ethos is important because it informs our approach towards students and staff. We are committed that enhancement of student experience has to go hand in hand with enhancement of staff experience. We provide a good working environment for all staff and聽encourage new and existing staff to feel part of the Newman Community.

Ian Fellows

Ian Fellows – Lecturer in Enterprise and Employability

“I joined Newman University at the beginning of 2018 after a career that spanned the public, private and third sectors. It has been the happiest period of my working life.

Being a small university, Newman affords me opportunities to work with great colleagues across the entire institution and to focus intently on what we all want: to partner with our students and help them to enjoy a truly enriching experience. In addition to lecturing, I support students with entrepreneurial aspirations in becoming their own boss and am incredibly proud of the great things that our graduates are going on to achieve.”

Melissa Clark

Melissa Clarke – Senior Careers and Work Related Learning Officer
“After studying here myself as a student from 2001-2004, I was delighted when I started my role here as Senior Careers and Work Related Learning Officer in 2006. Not only did Newman equip me with the employability skills to be successful upon graduation, but even whilst working here I have had the opportunity to complete my Postgraduate Diploma in Careers Education, Information, Advice and Guidance (HE). This has helped me to develop my knowledge, network with other careers advisers across the UK and gain a professional qualification. A student-centred approach is key at Newman and all staff work closely together which makes working here an enjoyable and worthwhile experience. You most certainly get to know everyone as it is a small and friendly institution. The flexible working hours allow me to work some evenings and weekend to ensure the needs of students are met. The student support team work so hard to meet the needs of Newman students and I thoroughly enjoy working in such a forward thinking and friendly team.”

Claire Owen

Claire Louise Owen – Primary ITE Lecturer
“I joined Newman University in September 2016 having spent over 20 years working in both primary and secondary schools in the West Midlands.聽 I completed my Masters in Education at Newman in June 2016 and was delighted to take up a lecturing post here shortly afterwards.聽 The transition into higher education was made so much easier by the welcome and support received by my new colleagues. As Newman is a small university it means that you get to know everyone very quickly across both faculties and the atmosphere is friendly and positive.

I teach on undergraduate and postgraduate ITE programmes and enjoy planning and delivering interactive sessions and debating current educational issues with students.聽 I also have responsibility for the Year 2 ITE students which incorporates pastoral as well as academic duties.

The best thing about working at Newman is seeing the progress made by the students and watching them become confident classroom practitioners.聽 It is always a proud moment when they come back to visit us during their NQT year and tell us how rewarding they are finding their new careers.

The variety in a typical week is incredible and can vary from visiting a student on placement to assisting with writing new modules and taking part in open days.聽 I have also had the opportunity to attend and present at conferences as well as taking part in academic writing workshops both here at Newman and at other institutions.”
